In-Class Exams (x2): 40% (20% each). Each exam will consist of six (6) short-answer Identification items (60%), and a short essay (40%).

Comparative Genres Paper: 15% A short (6-8 pp.) response essay requiring students to evaluate and compare the representation of Stalinist cultural images and “official” values in reference to individual works drawn from three separate artistic genres.

Comparative Lives Paper: 20% A comparative essay covering the books Gulag Lives and Sofia Petrovna based upon an assigned writing prompt.

Final Exam: 25%. Identical in format to the in-class course exams. Although the majority of materials/topics addressed in the final will be drawn from the last third of the semester, there will be cumulative elements.
